This is the section that is proposed to be partially bypassed by a new 23 Km deviation. A magic few days saw plenty of trains photographed on BHP, FMG & Rio lines. It was amazing to see the difference in 12 weeks are the amount of earthworks undertaken in readiness for the second track. Couple this with the latest generation of locos in multiple sets and then combine this with great scenery and its awesome! Hannah also contributed several photos in this collection. In May the final batch (in an order for 180) of 70 (35 two packs) of AHCF wagons arrived at Geraldton Port. And over the space of a couple of days were put on rails at Narngulu. The wagons were ordered via CIMC Australia for Mount Gibson Iron/ ARG. That all changed when an accident claimed two P classes. All of a sudden the remaining P classes were joined by DAZ, DD & DFZ classes of locos, the latter two classes being ex Queensland Railways 2100 and 2300 locos. 852 was the then Parkeston shunter, it later came back to W.A. after a stint in S.A. Today its in New South Wales. Photo taken on 22 April 1998. What a line up, the A class were then mainly out of service at Forrestfield, here we see A1504,A1502,A1501,A1503,A1509 & A1507 on 29 December 1997. Further A class etc. then stored at Forrestfield A1505,A1506,D1564,AB1533 & A1510 on 29 December 1997. AA1517/P2004 haul an empty grain train through Bringo heading towards Mullewa on 27 July 1997. Today you would be standing in thick wattle scrub to get this photo. AA1517/P2008 haul an empty grain train along Chapman Road, Geraldton on 14 February 1998. This line has been closed & lifted. CLP11 stands at Forrestfield on 29 December 1997. In 1997 it was still possible to sign an indeminity form & then go & take photos. Sunday, was also a very quiet day with very few loco movements. DL50 stands on one track whilst NR56/NR99 shunt a freight at Parkeston on 21 April 1998. The nearly new NR's show their colours well. The Loongana Lime train today still has interesting locos hauling it, back in 1998 the former AN EL class were the power, here we see EL63/EL52 at Parkeston on 21 April 1998. Today the EL class are owned by Chicago Freightcar (CFCL) and never venture to the West. It is hard to believe that with the introduction of the Q class that Westrail was only going to retain about 8 L class and all of the earlier H, K, & poor condition L class were stored here we see L274, K201,L271,L265& K206 (the line goes on) at Forresfield on 29 December 1997. A new NR52 at Kewdale on 29 December 1997, NR52 has recently been repainted into standard Pacific National colours. P2003 hauls a grain train to Geraldton through Greenough on 8 November 1997. P2003 is now P2503 is still at Narngulu but carries the Genessee & Wyoming ARG livery. P2008 freshly overhauled in the new Westrail yellow colour scheme, the first of the existing locos to be repainted. It is seen at RGC (now Iluka) open day at Narngulu on 21 September 1997. P2008 is now P2508 & currently being rebuilt. Almost brand new Q315 at Forrestfield on 29 December 1997. Q315 is now Q4015 and is the last of the Q's to still carry Westrail branding. Hotham Valley Railway at Pinjarra, locos present include the Z, S549, W903 & C1701. S549 was a visitor & is normally at Bassendean.Photo taken on 3 January 1998.

The S was coupled to a three coach train for shuttle trips within the Dowerin Yard limits (a couple of kms) and at the other end newly renamed DBZ 2313 "Shire of Dowerin", this loco came back from South Australia this year where it was named "Iron Duke". Previously it was DB 1593 "Shire of Northam". Newly outshopped P2516 "Shire of Coorow" was also present and performed a special run to Goomalling light engine with Minister Mac Tiernan. At Easter in 1981 W945 hauled a Vintage Train from Donnybook to Noggerup (on the line to Boyup Brook). W945 is seen on the return journey on 19 April 1981. For those around in the late 1970's, early 1980's it was not uncommon to see the newly introduced N class diesels either being hauled dead or being trialled yet again. On 22 April 1981 we see 1871 with N1881 with fitters in attendance trying to rectify another fault. The locos the N class were supposed to replace ended up in many cases outliving their replacements. H2 hauls an empty rail train towards Midland through South Guildford on 22 April 1981. L256 heads to Bassendean to shunt the super phosphate works on 22 April 1981.
